Forever VIP!
by Aileen Li §õé}²Ü | 2010/8/5 ¤W¤È 02:14:57
I don't know where to begin...the people, the places, the memories. In less than two weeks, unbreakable bonds were made. We all started out strangers, albeit Doris, Michael and I had already become good friends through our eventful flight to GuangZhou. In the following days, we got to know the rest of the group. Each person is so talented, so unique, and so passionate about music. I only wish our time together were longer. We got to practice our Chinese and experienced beautiful traditional Chinese music. We held on to our national pride while further understanding and appreciating our ethnic pride. Against the crazy humidity and heat, the early morning calls and late night returns to the hotels, each day was really a "journey" (quoting a tourguide) and the VIP was born.
As much as I dislike sounding cheesy and lame, this Sing Tao Global Youth Ambassador program has significantly impacted my life. Not a day goes by since I returned home that I haven't thought about and missed all the special people I've met. Seeing the tons of pictures uploaded onto Facebook (YES we can finally access it again!) literally brings tears and laughter. Tears from how much I miss everyone, laughter from all the crazy things we said and did (Wolfpacking, panders, Michre n' Meechre, beaVERR, Great Warr of Chinerr, and so on and so forth.) There are so many memories. There was so much laughter. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. The last day felt so surreal, especially when we learned, to our dismay, that the VIP wasn't leaving on the same flight. Instead, Louie left first on a crack-of-dawn flight, then the NY and Toronto flight at 10am, then a few more in the early evening. Yes, VIP was torn apart piece by agonizing piece (I kiddd XD...kinda.) Goodbyes were so difficult. How do you say goodbye to people who mean so much to you? We tried staying up all night to savor the last moments together. Not all of us made it. I plead guilty, though it was only just one hour D: The flight back to HongKong was uneventful, though the wait at the HK airport certainly was quite the opposite. The New Yorkers' wait of 3 hours was suddenly extended to 7, the Toronto...ers(?) was extended by half a day. Yup. We were all stuck together for just a little longer. As much as it irked me to have to wait so much longer (I really wanted to get the 14 hour flight over with), I was, and I think we all were, grateful for this unexpected additional time together. Back in JFK at NY, the Beaver n' his Damsels had to separate. But, I'm glad we all managed with big smiles and bear hugs :3
I don't think people really check this site anymore, but it's okay. I guess it was nice to get my feelings down on ...paper-ish. Words can't do justice to how much this trip meant to me. Still, I'll make one last feeble attempt:
I LOVE YOU GUYS! VIP FOREVER!<3
Final Thoughts

Home at last!! I am still jetlagged but I think I am awake enough to type this entry. I have mixed feelings right now. A part of me wants to stay in China a little longer just to explore more and the other part wants to go home. During the first few days of the trip, I really wanted to go back to America because I couldn't stand the low toilets, bathroom "flooding" problems, and even the food! The Chinese dishes were delicious, but having the same kind of food every night was not on my mind. Because of this, I missed hamburgers, pizzas, and steaks. Moreover, I'd probably caught the stomach flu since I was eating foods from street-carts, all of which looked so mouth-watering, until I realized how they could eventually upset my stomach. But luckily, it only lasted for less than two days and I was ready to eat real food again (yay! no more white porridge!!), avoiding street ones.

I am an American born Chinese. I grew up in San Gabriel, a bustling suburb filled with Chinese people in Los Angeles. My mother always taught me to be proud of my Chinese heritage, but since the motherland was so far from home, I grew up an American. I ate my rice every day, enjoyed Dim Sum on the weekends and spoke Cantonese to my family every night. However, I always missed the true feeling of being a real Chinese person. When my mother told me about the Sing Tao music competition, I was delighted. Though nervous, I gave it my all on competition day and was lucky enough to snag the trip to return to the mother land.

The Root Seeking Retreat has been a wonderful experience for me. As a Chinese American, I have always been fascinated by my culture and ethnicity. The trip has expanded my horizon vision significantly. Despite being physically tired from all the traveling, I tried to make the most out of my time in China. My appreciation for Chinese art, architecture, food, and history has grown significantly since the beginning of the retreat. I know that China will always have a special place in my heart.

Our first full day in Beijing; it was very exciting! The first thing we did today was go to attend a ceremony in the National Hall of the People near Tiananmen Square. Apparently, the hall holds the Chinese equivalent of Congressional meetings. Anyway, the ceremony was held to welcome our group along with 5000 overseas Chinese youths from 51 countries! I've met so many people from all over the world, including France, Denmark, Seychelles, and Thailand.

There are about 6,000 of us on taking part in this root-seeking trip, from a total of 51 countries, including Indonesia, France, England, Denmark, etc. After the talking, there were some truly spectacular performances. Personally, I was blown away by the ¤GJ performance given by a famous musician named ³¯x, the Kungfu performance by the Shaolin monks, and finally, the breathtaking, touching, and beautifully coordinated performance of the Thousand Hand Buddha, aka ¤d¤âÆ[µ.

I attended the opening ceremony at the Great Hall of the People today. I finally got the opportunity to visit this amazing site in person. The Tienaman Square and the performance center were surrounded by traditional architectures. It was also neat that major political figures were present at the event. The dance, music, and speeches were really well arranged. The highlight of my day was seeing the Great Wall of China in the afternoon. Even though the hike was lengthy, it felt really rewarding. My time in China has truly been an adventure.

Tons and tons of walking today! But it was all worth it. First, we got up really early, like around 5:30ish am, to get ready for breakfast and today's adventures. I wasn't feeling very swell because of a huge stomachache. I wasn't sure what was going on..maybe it was something that I ate...or maybe it was just the weather or a gust of wind blowing towards me... I didnt' know. I just knew that I had a very sensitive stomach and should stay away from street-cart-food-treats. Luckily, I took some medicine on the bus before I stepped into the Great Hall of the People.

It was a pretty nice building and the auditorium that the ceremony was held was sweeeeeeet.

Wow, Beijing. Hmmmm its reallly hot here, wappp. It took us a LONG time to get here, cause my hotness broke the plane. Sorry guys. But once that was fixed, we got to Beijing! Theres like over 9000 people here. Then we discovered all this sketchy-ness of the hotel, and thanks to Derek's story about the hotel and the all white/red eyes lady, we all (Victoria, Conrad, Doris and I) got very freaked out and decided to have a slumber party, we're we didnt sleep until like 5:00, and guess what, our wake up call was at 5:30, so yes, we DID......

Since there are over 5000 people staying in one hotel, we take hours and hours to get everything organized. I suggest that if you are very interested in massive-number-of-people management, to come to China and learn their methods. Workers came to knock at every door and at exactly 6am, there was announcement at breakfast to "put down your chopsticks and proceed to the buses". There were HUNDREDS of buses. I am not kidding.

I took the plane to Beijing today! This is a city that has a special place in my heart. Jiuhua Resort, which is where everyone is staying at, is a luxurious hotel located in the countryside of Beijing. I really like its recreational facilities and traditional architecture. I spent the afternoon visiting the downtown area of Beijing with my friends. The pedestrian friendly environment of the city is great for shopping and sightseeing. I got a taste of the area's street food. I feel like I am really making the most of my time here.

I have never seen so many people clad in yellow shirts that say "Root-Seeking Summer Camp in China" swarming any one place ever. Hello there! We got up this morning at 5 am to take the plane to Beijing today! To be perfectly frank, I came to really love Guangzhou-even with the hot weather-and I was quite sad to leave it. So today we had to wake up at an ungodly hour to go to Beijing. But what was ridiculous was that our entire WAP group was on the bus and we had to wait for another tour group for over 40 minutes. MERGH. I think I realized another one of my pet peeves is punctuality. FAIL on their part. Anyways our flight was delayed for a time. Those Chinese airlines really don¡¦t seem to understand time. Luckily I met a few pretty WAP people on the ride over. Those Mongolians are pretty nice even though they once tried to tear down our Great Wall haha J Even worse was that once we got there we got stuck with the douchiest tour guide ever. Biggest jerk ever. He just makes us miss Paolo all the more. AND we have to share the bus with those annoyingly late people who STOLE our VIP section. Who do they think they are right?! Sigh. Well the awesome Danish people I met yesterday still remembered me today and we bonded more. The hotel room is a little less nice and there¡¦s no wifi. But I guess I can¡¦t complain since we do have a shower.

Today we flew to Beijing early in the morning. We were all pretty sleepy when we left the hotel and boarded the plane. It was cool knowing that all the same people leaving Guangzhou would be coming with us to Beijing to continue "seeking family roots" (which is kinda the point to this trip).

Last Day in Sun Yat Sen University
by Cindy Zhang ±i¾å·ì | 2010/7/24 ¤U¤È 04:27:12
We had a concert on our last day in Sun Yat Sen University. The performers were undergraduate from Sun Yat Sen University and our North America group. The performances are so well organized in that our group played western instrument such as clarinet and piano; whereas the university students played traditional Chinese instruments, such as Er Hu, Gu Zheng. I am a piano player and have been fascinated by it ever since at the age of 4. However, I was so impressed by the peculiar sound created by the Chinese instruments. For example, the Er Hu can really mimic the voice of horses; whereas the PiPa can remind you of the tiny raindrops. Everything is so beautifully presented by the university performers. I have learnt GoZheng for one summer while I was little, and I understood the time investment and attention requirement in order to master this instrument. Unfortunately, I missed the chance of continue the learning opportunity due to geography strain (we don¡¦t have that many GuZheng players in Vancouver ). In terms of the North American team, we were as awesome as always. Need I say more? I am never surprised at the awesomeness of my camp pals. Yay!
